Choosing the right system for your home can be daunting and sometimes confusing, at MCS we are here to help you make the right choice by giving you the information you need.
The first step is looking at the type of property you live in and which system would best suit your lifestyle. The most common system types are explained below:
Combi Boiler - Provides hot water & central heating in a single package.
System Boiler - Provides a heat source for your radiators & hot water cylinder, this boiler has a pump built into it and your system is pressurised.
Regular Boiler - Provides a heat source for your radiators & hot water cylinder, better for older systems where pressurising the system may cause leaks.
If you are unsure what the best system for your home would be, at MCS we are experts at guiding you through the different options available. The video below explains a little more about what each type of boiler does, we can also help you by advising whether your chosen system type is suitable.
After choosing the type of boiler you think is suitable, it is then time to look at accessories.
Combi Boilers
If you have chosen a combi boiler then the next main thing to look at is your thermostat, there are hundreds of different thermostats available. The main choice is between a standard thermostat or a smart thermostat.
Since 2018 all new combi boiler installations were required to comply with 'Boiler Plus' regulations, a directive to improve the efficiency of heating systems. Boiler Plus states that certain energy saving measures must be installed in order to comply and avoid potential fines.
In order to comply with Boiler Plus the installer must choose between one of four measures:
- Smart thermostat - Has many features including control from a phone, weather compensation, smart scheduling and much more.
- Flue gas heat recovery unit - Removes waste heat from the flue gasses being emmited and uses the heat to warm hot water prior to gas being burnt.
- Load compensated thermostat - Heating temperature is based on internal temperature.
- Weather compensated themostat - uses external sensors to preempt heat requirements.
System OR Regular Boilers
If you think a system or regular boiler might be what you need, then consider whether your existing hot water system meets requirements. Traditional systems with header tanks sometimes do not provide good water pressure, it isnt however essential to replace this when changing the boiler.
Should you wish to upgrade your hot water system then we recommend installing a mains pressure cylinder. In order for installation to be sucessful, your mains pressure must meet the minimum requirement (We can test this on your behalf).
A mains pressure 'Unvented' cylinder does not require header tanks, it is regarded as one of the best performinge hot water systems for your home. If you wish to fill a bath quickly, or have a powerful shower then this option is definitely worth consideration.
Installation is quick and easy, the tank is usually sited in place of your old cylinder (or can be moved should you wish). Some additional pipework may be required however this is usually minimal.

During the installation of your new system is also the optimal time to fit additional features to your home. Installing components whilst other work is being carried out often reduces the amount of labour required. At MCS we also offer installation of:
